ORLANDO, Fla. — It’s been over a week since six delegates of the unified Haitian Special Olympics soccer team were reported missing in Osceola County and experts say cause for concern about their safety will only grow the longer the investigation drags on.

“Timing means a lot because the first few hours are critical to hopefully locating that person safely and nearby,” Bryanna Fox, an associate professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of South Florida, said. “As time goes on, the odds of something negative happening increases.”

The church shooting Thursday in Alabama that killed two people and wounded another is just the latest recent high-profile shooting in May and June. The most prominent were a racist attack that killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a gunman who killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas, which was the deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade. Others include the attack on a heavily Taiwanese congregation in California, an attack on a medical office in Oklahoma and a gun melee in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA — It appears that James Harden will get paid ... but at a discount for the 76ers.

WASHINGTON — If you’re feeling a surge of optimism over the Phillies’ chances of finally returning to the playoffs, it’s probably because they’ve reeled off 11 wins in 13 games since firing the manager. Or maybe it’s because they’re averaging 6.4 runs per game in June.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Aaron Ashby exited his start against the New York Mets with left forearm tightness. The team said he was removed as a precaution. Ashby gave up Mark Canha’s two-run homer that tied the score at 4 in the fifth inning, then retired Brandon Nimmo on a grounder. That’s when manager Craig Counsell, pitching coach Chris Hook and an athletic trainer went to the mound. Following a discussion, Ashby walked off the field with the trainer and was replaced by Hoby Milner. Ashby, the nephew of former major league pitcher Andy Ashby, entered 1-5 with a 3.91 ERA in seven starts and six relief appearances this season, his second in the majors.

Kyle Schwarber homered twice, Zack Wheeler won his third consecutive start, and the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Washington Nationals 10-1 in the opener of a five-game series. Philadelphia scored seven runs in the third inning. The Phillies have won 12 of their last 14 games and improved to 11-2 under interim manager Rob Thomson. The last-place Nationals have lost five in a row and eight of 10. They have dropped nine in a row to the Phillies dating to last season. Nationals starter Patrick Corbin gave up nine runs in 3 1/3 innings, although only two were earned

Ezequiel Duran hit a three-run triple with two out in the ninth inning to give the Texas Rangers a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Tigers closer Gregory Soto loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter before Duran hit a ball just inside first base and into the right-field corner. All three runners scored, giving Soto his second blown save of the season. Dennis Santana (3-2) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning, and Joe Barlow pitched the ninth for his 12th save. Soto’s collapse, which led to Detroit’s fifth straight loss, wasted seven scoreless innings from Detroit starter Beau Brieske.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has won former President Donald’s Trump’s endorsement in his 2023 bid for governor. Cameron tweeted the endorsement Thursday evening. Trump's support offers a momentum boost given the ex-president’s enduring popularity among Republican voters in the state. Trump says he has known Cameron since the beginning of what he calls the Kentuckian’s “meteoric rise.” He describes the first-term attorney general as “absolutely outstanding in every way.” Trump’s endorsement comes about 11 months before the state's GOP gubernatorial primary. Cameron is among several Republicans already vying for the GOP nomination to challenge popular Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear next year.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli forces have shot and killed three Palestinians and wounded eight others during a military operation in the occupied West Bank. The ministry did not say how the casualties occurred. Palestinian media quoted witnesses as saying Israeli troops opened fire at a car in Jenin and killed three passengers. Heavy exchanges of gunfire were heard in videos circulated on social media, and later a bullet-riddled vehicle with bloodstains.  There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which carries out frequent overnight raids in Palestinian-controlled parts of the West Bank to arrested suspected and wanted Palestinian militants.

Mets right-hander Tylor Megill has left his start against Milwaukee with shoulder discomfort, the latest setback in a promising season for the second-year pitcher. The rotation replacement for injured ace Jacob deGrom this season, Megill entered 4-2 with a 4.50 ERA. He started for New York on opening day and pitched five scoreless innings in a win at Washington.

President Joe Biden has signed a bill that will give around-the-clock security protection to the families of Supreme Court justices. The new law, which passed the House this week and the Senate last month, comes one day after a federal grand jury indicted a Simi Valley, California, man on one count of attempting to murder a Justice of the United States. Authorities said the man was arrested last week near Justice Brett Kavanaugh's house after threatening to kill the justice. Threats against the justices have increased since a draft of an opinion that would sharply curtain abortion rights leaked last month.

Two members of a school board in Oregon have resigned, citing controversial board decisions in the past year. KGW-TV reports Newberg School District board member Rebecca Piros said she can no longer work with people who she feels do not have the best interests of every student and every staff member at heart.
